Beating the Heat: Summer Safety Tips for Seniors
Houston summers are no joke — and for older adults, the heat can be more than uncomfortable. It can be
dangerous. As we age, our bodies become less efficient at regulating temperature, and certain medications
can make heat sensitivity even worse. The good news? A few simple precautions can keep your loved ones
safe, cool, and comfortable all season long.
Watch for warning signs.
Heat exhaustion can sneak up quickly, showing up as dizziness, heavy sweating, confusion, or nausea. If a
loved one seems “off” on a hot day, don’t wait it out — check their temperature and get them somewhere cool
right away.
Hydration is everything.
Thirst signals weaken with age, so seniors often don’t feel thirsty until they’re already dehydrated. Encourage
water throughout the day, not just when they ask for it.
Time outdoor activities wisely.
Mornings and evenings are cooler and gentler on the body. Save errands, walks, and gardening for these
windows, and keep midday hours for indoor rest.
Dress for the weather.
Lightweight, breathable, light-colored clothing helps the body stay cool naturally.
Check the AC — and the plan B.
Make sure air conditioning is working properly, and have a backup plan (like a cooling center or a family
member’s home) in case of a power outage.
At Ruach Homes, we keep a close eye on hydration, temperature, and comfort every visit —
especially during Houston’s hottest months. If you’re wondering whether your loved one could use an
extra layer of support this summer, we’re here to help.
